Check out the most desired freelance skills in demand

Freelance skills in demand

Freelancers, ahoy!

Do you know the freelance skills in demand? I mean the most desired freelance skills.

Let us talk this over.

I was asking Google to tell me which are the freelance skills in demand, and which are the most desired freelance skills.

There is a subtle difference here.

Freelance skills in demand are those that the industry, or the market, wants.

On the other hand, the most desired freelance skills are the ones that the freelancers want to learn. These are the most coveted skills, yes, but not necessarily the freelance skills in demand.

What I’ve done in this article is putting up a combination of the two, the emphasis being more on freelance skills in demand, or the market’s view (if you want it that way).

If you’re a freelancer, or a discerning reader, you have to sift through the info’ here and take an informed view.

It’s a bit onerous, but I think the best way to look at them is by understanding the standpoints of the sources, for better guidance.

Let’s begin.

Upwork’s Q2-17 report on freelance skills in demand

Top freelance skills in demand as per Upwork

Upwork is arguably the largest freelancing website, and in its Q2-17 report released in August, 2017, it pointed out that developing Learning Management Systems or LMSs is the fourth most needed freelance skills in demand.

This makes sense because there is a renewed thrust on continuous learning of new skills in the rapidly changing tech scenario.

Interestingly, Shopify development is seeing a rapid growth, people are relying on it in greater numbers as it continues to be one of the most popular ecommerce platforms enabling both individuals and businesses to sell online or on social media.

8 most in-demand freelance skills

Freelance skills that cause less stress

I’m always intrigued at how the freelance skills in demand vary from time to time.

I’ve the feeling that most in-demand freelance skills, especially those that are listed on freelance sites, are intermediary or stop-gap in nature.

Let me explain a bit more.

If you’re looking for someone to help you with Swift development, or information security, or image processing, you in fact want to plug a gap in your existing workflow setup.

Contrast that with hiring freelance skills, who you want to take charge of one or more of your business segments.

When you have that objective in mind to attain financial freedom, you need to be selective about what freelance skills you actually want to be served for the benefit of your business.

Here is a list of 8 such freelance skills in demand, courtesy this post.

  1. How to build websites
  2. How to become an invaluable graphic designer
  3. How to take high quality, original photographs
  4. How to manage inventory, oversee accounts and perform financial reporting
  5. How to market through compelling written content
  6. How to optimize a website to appear higher in search results
  7. How to maintain a healthy brand image
  8. How to offer excellent legal and risk-avoidance advice as a compliance manager

The reason many wholesome freelance skills don’t find a mention in Upwork is because jobs listed on Upwork are mostly stop-gap in nature.

However, objectively speaking, the skills to build website, to design graphics, to optimize for search engines, or to create compelling contents, are here to stay for a long, long time.

They are NOT going to go away anytime soon, rest assured on that.

Summing up

There are 2 ways to pursue freelance skills in demand. And that – sometimes unknown to you – depends much on how you visualize your life’s aim and your earning potential.

As I mentioned above, Upwork jobs are mostly small-time, price-limited works. There will always be a limit to your monthly earnings here, simply because you cannot scale up A) the number of hours you can work every day/month, or B) your asking rate per hour of work owing to competition.

Yet, many people pursue working on freelance sites because there usually is a constant flow of work, especially after you earn good ratings from the hirers.

The other way is to build yourself as an agency (even if you’re the only person in it when you start), capable of handling large to super-large projects of companies.

The 8 in-demand freelance skills above belong to large projects, the advantage is that you can make a lot of money as a freelancing agency.

This of course needs a lot of work, patience, perseverance, and above all an unflinching willingness to succeed.

Wish you all the very best in the new year.
